Did you know school nursing began in the early 1900s as an experiment in New York City? Children were missing school on a regular basis because of treatable diseases, so a nurse, Lina Rogers, RN, was brought into the school system to see if she could make a difference. The rate of absences decreased drastically, and school nursing grew to be a critical nursing specialty. Today, school nurses are responsible for caring for students who get sick or injured during school hours, as well as educating students about healthcare and growth development.

These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week each year.
