Helpful Hints!

Nursing students often face a variety of challenges, from long study hours to the financial strain of tuition. The coursework and exams can be intense, but they’re essential steps on the path to your future career as a nurse.

It’s a lot of hard work and pressure, but don’t worry—you’ve got this! Once you make it through nursing school, you’ll earn the title of a professional nurse. And remember, at Sumner Nursing College, you’re never alone on this journey. Our supportive staff is always here to provide guidance and assistance, ensuring you’re set up for success. Whether you’re just starting your first year or nearing graduation, we’ve got helpful tips and resources to support you every step of the way.

Here’s some helpful tips!

  • Understand your learning style. Discover how you learn best and use that knowledge to enhance your success in school.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Most instructors are more than willing to help, so take advantage of their expertise whenever you need clarification or support.
  • Prepare before class (if possible). Even if it’s not mandatory, doing readings and assignments ahead of time will help you engage more fully in lectures and make the most out of your class time.
  • Utilize all available resources. Since you’re already paying for your education, make sure to take full advantage of everything your school offers—job boards, recorded lectures, etc.
  • Explore external learning tools. Supplement your education with resources outside of school, like NCLEX practice tests and other study aids that can provide different perspectives and strategies.
  • Set realistic goals. While it’s great to aim for perfect grades, it’s also important to maintain balance in your life (mental health, time, family, etc.). Consider using the SMART method to set goals that are achievable:
    – Specific – What exact goals are you aiming for? What steps are needed?
    – Measurable – How will you measure your progress? What data will tell you if you’re on track?
    – Achievable – Are your goals realistic? Do you have the tools you need to reach them?
    – Relevant – How do your goals align with your curriculum and career path?
    – Time-bound – What’s your timeline for completing each goal?
  • Create a strong support network. Reach out to friends or family for help, especially during tough times. Having people to lean on can make all the difference.
  • Build friendships with fellow nursing students. You’ll be spending a lot of time together, so forming connections will not only make nursing school more enjoyable but also help you share insights and support each other through the challenges ahead.
